Project Overview

The new bridge replaces the existing 18th-century humpback bridge—part of the Hanoverian Military Road network—which lies 150 m upstream and is now a protected structure. Fabricated at the J&D Pierce East Kilbride facility, the bridge required precise development of its 35-degree sloping outer web and 306 mm mid-span camber to achieve the correct vertical curve alignment. Testing and inspection were completed to fatigue category F56 in accordance with PD6705-2 and to Execution Class 3 under BS EN 1090-2. The use of weathering steel allows the patina to form naturally, giving the finished structure a rustic appearance that blends into the Glen Gairn landscape. Delivered to site in four sections, the components were welded into twin 35.5 m, 93-tonne box girders using full-penetration butt welds. Installation was carried out with a Liebherr LG1550 strut-jib mobile crane, completing the placement of both girders and tie bracing within a single 10-hour work window.
