Project Overview

Testing and inspection were carried out to service fatigue category F56 in accordance with PD6705-2, with the bridge built to Execution Class 3 under BS EN 1090-2. The structure forms a new access route from Longwood Drive to the proposed Velindre Cancer Centre, located around 250 m northwest of the existing facility. J&D Pierce supported the project through early collaboration, helping finalise steelwork detailing and bearing selection. The bridge’s pre-cambers, high skew, and longitudinal fall created complex geometries at the bearing stiffeners and diaphragm connections, requiring detailed planning by the project and in-house design teams to ensure accurate fit-up and stability throughout erection. Fabrication took place at the J&D Pierce/Strubeam facility in East Kilbride. The main girders were delivered in three sections and assembled into full-length units measuring 56.3 m and weighing 112 t, before being moved via SPMTs to the abutments. Installation of the girders was completed using a Terex/Demag TC2800 strut-jib mobile crane.
