Project Overview

Testing and inspection were completed to service fatigue categories F56 and F71 in accordance with PD6705-2, with the structure built to Execution Class 3 under BS EN 1090-2. The bridge forms a major structural element of the Carlisle Southern Link Road Project, a key scheme aimed at reducing traffic congestion across the city. J&D Pierce worked closely with the main contractor to meet the project’s demanding requirements, including a critical rail installation during a restricted possession period. To ensure accuracy, the main girders were trial-assembled and surveyed at the fabrication facility, supporting a complex erection sequence that required careful planning and coordination by the Project and Temporary Works teams. Fabricated at the J&D Pierce/Strubeam facility in East Kilbride, the girders were delivered in sections and assembled on site into long-span units. The back spans reached 65 m and 215 t, while the drop-in spans were 50 m and 170 t. Once assembled, the units were moved via SPMTs to the crane pad, with installation completed using the high-capacity Liebherr LR11350.
